Paul Demaria Guaitamacchi was born in London in 1956 to Italian parents and comes from a family where all of its members are unusually artistic.  His father Bruno, (1931–2005) was an accomplished oil painter and his mother Magda, is a much celebrated ceramist.  Both have exhibited internationally.

Paul began his formal artistic studies at the Liceo Artistico di Brera and later at the Accademia delle Belle Arti di Brera in Milan (Accademy of Fine Arts of Brera). However the rhythm of the academic apprenticeship was going too slow for Paul, so he decided to complete his artistic education under the guidance of a true “painting master", his father Bruno, and he left the Academy after the second year determined to become a painter as quickly as possible.



Bruno transmitted to Paul the method and approach to painting for many years, but it was their exchange of views on painting that has always been the most intense, deep and productive for Paul. Together they shared several painting experiences all over Italy and England. Because of this sharing of experiences, and not wanting in any way to be favored by the fame of the father, Paolo Maria Guaitamacchi changed his professional name to Demaria (literally meaning “of Maria”) and began using his baptismal name from his childhood in England, Paul. 



Always earning his living only through his painting, Paul began selling his first pieces at the age of 16 at the Galleria Bolzani which was at the time the most prominent “traditional” fine art gallery in the high fashion district of Milan.  Later, working with the art dealer Dottor Gianfranco Pacini, Paul was able to also sell and exhibit his paintings in Venice and Verona and on Lake Garda where Pacini was based.



In the 1990's Paul began exhibiting and selling his work in one man shows at the Galleria Bolzani and then later at the Highgate Contemporary Art Gallery (in London), the Galleria al Ritrovo (in Montevecchia - Cernusco Lombardone) and the Galleria Valentinarte (in Bellagio on Lake Como).  

After 2001 (and after the marriage to his American wife), Paul expanded his gallery work across the Atlantic and began working with several galleries in the Chicago area, beginning work first with The Signature of Art Gallery (in Glencoe), and then later with The Maple Avenue Gallery (in Evanston), the Kamp Gallery (in Winnetka) and finally with  Hilligoss Galleries  (on Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago along the famous “magnificent mile”).

Beginning in the early 1990’s Paul organized and ran a personal exhibition each summer in the lovely Italian village of Canzo, (at the foot-hills of the Italian "Pre-Alps" where Paul spent his adolescence immersed in the very "nature" that would later become so central to his painting).  This annual exhibition traditionally opened during the last weekend of August and  ran through the second weekend of September and was set up primarily for Paul’s many Italian followers and collectors.  August of 2012 proudly marked the 20th year anniversary for this exhibition in Canzo.

While Paul has experience in painting interiors and in portraying the human figure, his most renowned forte is with landscapes and still-lifes. He commits himself to the plein-air style of painting, much used by the early impressionist painters where subjects are always painted "on the spot" in their natural settings. This allows the artist to reflect the naturally occurring changes of light, colour and mood.  However, in recent years, while still keeping the plein air experience central, Paul has also been elaborating more on studio compositions.  These later works incorporate a more “contemporary” approach in the handling of colour, texture and composition.

In order for Paul to realize his best painting results that would withstand the “test of time”, he uses only the finest quality oil colours and linen and jute canvasses purchased directly from Belgium.  The paintings are ultimately outlined in Italian hand-treated frames from Florence.

Paul has traditionally focused his painting on subjects in Italy (in Brianza, Tuscany, Lake Como, Liguria, Venice, Florence, Sicily), England (in Suffolk, Kent, Cornwall, and Yorkshire), France (in Provence) and in Switzerland (near St. Moritz).  However, in recent years his regular travels to Chicago, where he maintains a small painting studio, have allowed him to apply his techniques to a variety of cityscapes with exciting results. This ongoing travel reflects Paul’s desire to expand further his style by seeking the balance between a commitment to the “traditions” of his work while pursuing the challenges that come with painting fresh subjects in new settings.

Throughout the year Paul’s paintings are displayed in his own personal gallery, The Open Lake & Landscape Studio d’Arte which is situated in the charming and characteristic medieval town of Varenna on beautiful Lake Como. The gallery is open afternoons and evenings during the summer season from April through October and by appointment in the mornings (and during the winter months).

Paolo Maria Guaitamacchi è nato a Londra nel 1956 da genitori italiani e proviene da una famiglia in cui tutti i cinque componenti sono artisti di professione.  Il padre Bruno Guaitamacchi, che ci ha lasciato nel 2005,  è ricordato come un Maestro della pittura ad olio mentre la madre Magda Guaitamacchi è una ceramista e scultrice molto apprezzata.

Paolo iniziò i suoi studi artistici formali presso il liceo e l'Accademia delle Belle Arti di Brera di Milano, ma abbandonò l'accademia dopo il secondo anno, impaziente di mettersi alla prova come pittore professionista. Il ritmo dell'apprendistato accademico, in quegli anni socialmente turbolenti, andava troppo a rilento e decise perciò di completare l'educazione artistica sotto la guida di un sicuro Maestro: il padre Bruno Guaitamacchi. Bruno gli trasmise metodo ed approccio per diversi anni e per tutta la vita lo scambio di vedute sulla pittura è sempre stato intenso, profondo e proficuo. Insieme hanno condiviso diverse esperienze di pittura in Inghilterra e in Italia. Per via di questa condivisione e dal non volere trarre  beneficio dalla fama del padre, Paolo Maria Guaitamacchi adottò il nome d'arte Demaria (aggiungendo la particella al secondo nome) e tornando al nome di battesimo avvenuto in Inghilterra (Paul).

Paul Demaria si è sempre guadagnato da vivere attraverso la  pittura,  cominciando a vendere i suoi primi lavori fin dall'età di 16 anni alla Galleria Bolzani. A quel tempo, questa galleria era senz'altro la più importante in fatto di arte figurativa nel Milanese, sita nella centralissima piazza San Babila.  Più tardi, lavorando con il mercante d'arte dott. Gianfranco Pacini,  Demaria è stato anche in grado di vendere ed esporre i suoi dipinti a Venezia e Verona e sul Lago di Garda.

Demaria ha cominciato nel 1990 a vendere regolarmente le sue opere con mostre personali alla "Galleria Bolzani", alla"Highgate FineArt Gallery" di Londra, alla "Galleria al Ritrovo" (Montevecchia-Cernusco Lombardone) ed alla "Galleria Valentinarte" a Bellagio. Ha lavorato anche con tre gallerie a Chicago: "Signature of Art Gallery" e "Kamp Gallery" rispettivamente nei prestigiosi sobborghi di Glencoe e Winnetka e la "Hilligoss Galleries" sulla centralissima Michigan Avenue di Chicago stessa.

Il suo studio-galleria personale, sito nella bella Varenna, sul Lago di Como, permette di visualizzare le opere durante il corso dell'anno. A fine estate egli ha organizzato, per più di vent’anni, l'importante mostra annuale a Canzo, bel paese delle prealpi lombarde, per gli appassionati e i suoi collezionisti. Canzo non è una scelta casuale ma dove egli trascorse buona parte dell'adolescenza immerso in quella "Natura" che sarebbe poi diventata il tema dominante della sua pittura.

Mentre Paolo ha esperienza anche nel ritrarre la figura umana e gli interni, la sua carriera si è evoluta principalmente su soggetti di paesaggio e natura morta. Ha sempre prediletto il "plein air" in pittura, molto praticato dai pittori impressionisti e macchiaioli, in cui soggetti e tematiche sono dipinti "dal vero e sul posto", nei loro contesti naturali. Questo gli consente di potere riflettere sui cambiamenti di luce e di colore nelle continue variazioni atmosferiche, cogliendo gli stati d'animo che esse suscitano. Ultimamente, pur mantenendo centrale l’esperienza “plein air”, elabora le esperienze su composizioni in Studio. In questi lavori incrementa alcuni aspetti più “contemporanei” integrando le varie possibilità materiche del colore.

Per potere ottenere la miglior "resa" possibile, sono adoperati esclusivamente colori a olio e tele di lino o iuta e altri materiali della migliore qualità.

La pittura di Demaria si è focalizzata primariamente sugli aspetti del paesaggio italiano (Brianza, Toscana, Lago di Como, Liguria, Venezia, Firenze, Sicilia, ecc.) anche se ha lavorato molto in Inghilterra, nello Yorkshire, in Francia ed in Svizzera. Nell'ultimo ventennio,  si è recato a Chicago, dove ha tuttora un piccolo studio,  nello stato dell'Arizona e a Kyoto in Giappone, dove è stato in grado di applicare le sue tecniche a una varietà di nuove tematiche tra cui appunto i paesaggi urbani americani, con risultati che non mancano di sorprendere. Questo recente viaggiare riflette il desiderio di espandere ulteriormente le sue tematiche d'artista, riuscendo ad equilibrare l'impegno verso la "tradizione" del suo stile di lavoro e perseguendo al tempo stesso soggetti "freschi" e nuovi e le sfide formali che inevitabilmente essi richiedono.
